Best Vegan Chocolate Banana Bread Recipe

Iโ€˜m so excited to share this recipe with you guys, because, Iโ€™m not lying when I say this is the BEST Vegan Chocolate Banana Bread Iโ€™ve ever made! Iโ€˜m very happy that one of the most beloved recipes here on my blog is my classic vegan banana bread. Itโ€™s awesome that so many of you have loved changing it up by adding chocolate into it. I really love this idea, but I think when you make it with chocolate, there need to be some changes from my classic recipe. Changes that make it softer and moister! So I came up with the idea to create the perfect recipe. One which is soft, rich and very chocolatey! Finally, here it is!

The perfect breakfast and dessert!

Have I mentioned how much I love banana bread and chocolate? Well, in case I havenโ€™t, let me just say that I really do! One great thing about Vegan Chocolate Banana Bread is that itโ€™s healthier than chocolate cake, even though it almost tastes like veganย chocolate cake. So itโ€™s the perfect sweet treat for any time of the day! I really love making it in advance and keeping it in the fridge for the following days so that I always have a quick and yummy snack on hand. But to be honest, it never lasts that long in my kitchen, because itโ€™s too delicious not to eat all of it! Starting by enjoying it for breakfast, then later as an afternoon dessert with ice cream on top and maybe also before going to bed as a late night snack with extra peanut butter, haha!

How to make Vegan Banana Bread

Another great thing about this recipe is that itโ€™s very easy to make! All you need is one bowl, a spoon, a fork, and a few simple ingredients! You donโ€™t even need a food processor, mixer or blender! Actually, the batter is mixed together in less than 5 minutes, depending on how long you need to peel the bananas maybe, haha – okay, just joking! But Iโ€˜m not joking when I say that it really is very quick and easy to make!

As I mentioned before, we need only a few ingredients! Just flour, cocoa, baking powder, ripe bananas, sugar (or another sweetener), oil, non-dairy milk, vanilla extract, and dairy-free chocolate chips for the topping. Anyways, the chocolate chips are not necessary for this recipe but if youโ€™re like me, you can never have enough chocolate!

Can I make gluten-free Banana Bread?

If you want to make a gluten-free Vegan Chocolate Banana Bread, you can substitute a gluten-free flour blend 1:1. If you canโ€™t find it in a store or online shop, you can also use gluten-free oat flour or make your own oat flour. Simply put gluten-free oats into a food processor or grinder and process into oat flour. Just keep in mind that when using oat flour, your vegan banana bread will not be as soft as when you use a lighter flour. Honestly, I havenโ€™t tried using other flours yet, but feel free to try it. I recommend adjusting the liquid and adding more non-dairy milk if needed because different types of flour absorb less or more liquid.

Ingredients

  • 1 โ…“ cups (160 g) all-purpose flour or spelt flour or sub gluten-free flour*
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch
  • ยฝ cup (50 g) cocoa powder
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • ยฝ tsp salt
  • 2 very ripe large bananas
  • โ…“ cup (100 ml) + 1 tbsp non-dairy milk
  • โ…“ cup (75 g) oil
  • ยฝ cup (115 g) sugar or to taste
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp apple cider vinegar
  • vegan chocolate chips for topping (optional)

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 350หšF (175หšC). Grease and line a 9-inch loaf pan with parchment paper so that there is an overhang on both sides.
  • Place the flour, cornstarch, cocoa, baking powder, baking soda and salt in a bowl and whisk together.
  • Mash the bananas with a fork. Add to a measuring jar along with the non-dairy milk, oil, sugar, vanilla extract and apple cider vinegar. Stir well to combine.
  • Pour this mixture into the flour mixture and stir until just combined.
  • Fill the batter into the prepared pan. Optionally, sprinkle over chocolate chips. Bake for about 40-50 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the middle comes out clean. (If you want moist banana bread, make sure not to overbake it.)
  • Let cool completely in the pan. Then using the parchment paper to remove it.
  • Slice and enjoy!

Notes

  • To make this banana bread gluten-free, I recommend using a gluten-free flour blend 1:1.
  • If using another flour, such as oat flour or whole grain flour, keep in mind that your banana bread wonโ€™t get as fluffy and soft as when using a lighter flour. Also, please make sure to adjust the liquid by adding more non-dairy milk, if needed, because different flours absorb different amounts of liquid.
  • You can use any sweeteners you like, such as maple syrup, agave syrup, coconut sugar or other.

This cake was so easy to make and tasted absolutely delicious. Like everyone other recipe of Biancaโ€™s that Iโ€™ve tried, I found the instructions and timings to be absolutely perfect. The cake was moist and flavourful – just the right amount of chocolate and banana. My daughters enjoyed it for breakfast and my husband and I with a nice cup of tea! Thanks Bianca!

If you wanted to swap banana with pears how would you do it? Peeled, steamed and pureed? Caramelised? Would it still be moist at the end? Do you have a chocolate and pear plumcake/cake/ciambellone recipe? Thank you

      Hi Michelle,
I am not quite sure I’m not quite sure if you can just substitute mashed pears for the bananas. The bananas also help bind the cake. But since you can make the same binding with apples and pears are very similar, it’s worth a try. Unfortunately, I do not have a recipe with pear.

    Dear Bianca,

Thank yo so much for this lovely and caring recipe.

I really appreciate that you use mostly basic baking ingredients for this amazingly tasty cake.
During the lockdown it’s getting difficult to find even some essential ingredients. I feel so much support that I can make something special for my family but also don’t need to worry about grocery shopping.

PS. I’ve already made this lovely cake 3 times within few weeks time for my family. and they all turned out so good.

Wish you and your loved ones health and safety.

I made this today after looking forward to making it for a few weeks, but it just tasted of oil. I used the 75g as advised and used sunflower oil as this is mild, when I measured it out it seemed a lot so I double checked is measured correct and I had. Do you have any alternatives/suggestions please?

      Hi Julie!
I usually use canola oil because it tastes very neutral. I do not really think that this banana bread tastes like oil. If you like to use less, you can replace part of it with applesauce.

Just baked this tonight and wowโ€” so good! I followed the recipe exactly as listed and it came together so quickly and easily, which I loved! It took about 40 minutes to bake for me. My only complaint is that it is a little bit dryโ€” I am wondering if after it sits overnight and settles it will be slightly more moist! If not, I might try adding a little more plant-based milk the next time I bake it to see what happens. Overall, a delicious recipe that I will definitely be saving for future use! Thanks so much!!

      Hello Maggie,
maybe it’s because of the size of the bananas used. If you like it more moist, you can also add a little more oil or some peanut butter. I’m glad you like it! Thanks for your great feedback. ๐Ÿ™‚

I have made this so many times and everyone who eats it loves it. I have made it GF with a 1:1 Dove’s GF flour, but with the addition of some almond flour for some extra moisture. I have also added another banana for the same reason, and tend to have to add in much more plant milk also. I have also added extra choc chips and even some chopped walnuts into the batter. Being GF I have to be extra careful not to overbake.

Thank you for a wonderful recipe!

This was one of the easiest recipes I’ve ever made! The loaf turned out super moist with just the right amount of sweetness! I swapped out the cornstarch for arrowroot. Also, right after it was finished baking, I slid out the baking rack from the oven and used my offset spatula to smother the melted chocolate chips all over the entire top surface into a frosting!

    Hi Bianca,

Thank You for sharing this amazing recipe.
Based on gluten free diet I made it with 80g buckwheat flour and 80g self rising rice flour.
I used little agave syrup and stevia to sweeten the cake. Also I reduced the amount of oil, therefore I used around 10ml and the rest was soy milk.

Omg! Iโ€™m vegan for 3 years, I tried many cakes but this! – is the best I eaten, tried and also made so far! The texture of the sponge is perfect. Light, soft and moist! I put pure apple pure on the top of each slice! Thank you again!

Very tasty! I realize that the bananas I used probably fall into the โ€œmediumโ€ category rather than โ€œ2 largeโ€, because the texture did turn out a bit more crumbly than Iโ€™d like… but my gut tells me that if I just use 3 med. bananas next time (And maybe some walnuts) that itโ€™ll be perfect. ๐Ÿ™‚

Thank you! And I donโ€™t feel like I said enough about how good the bread is!! In spite of my small ingredient miscalculation itโ€™s still so tasty and chocolateyโ€” still a good texture, very light and soft. Itโ€™s been good for breakfast with coffee, a snack, and dessert.

I just made this and Iโ€™m definitely adding it to my favorites!!! So good and so easy!!! I did 1cup all purpose and 1/3 cup whole wheat flour – just because I wanted to use up my remaining ww flour. I also subbed the oil for applesauce because I avoid oils. It was still perfectly moist and fluffy. Not dense and gummy at all like can happen with some vegan cakes. Next time I think I will try cutting the sugar in half as well and maybe even sub the apple cider vinegar for chocolate balsamic. Iโ€™m so happy I found this recipe! Thank you!!

This was the most amazingly moist, fluffy, decadently tasting cake I’ve ever had……yes really! So easy to make and very cost effective. As it was Easter, I waited until it was cool then poured over a small bar of melted sugar-free/dairy free chocolate and then placed a few walnuts on top. It was absolutely delicious and a fantastic way of using up my overripe bananas. Making this would be a great way to keep your kiddies entertained too whilst home-schooling etc. lots of practical maths in weighing and measuring ingredients. Kids regardless of age love cooking/baking so give it a go,,,,,,,,it’s win win all round. Thanks Bianca

This bread is very good and very easy! It’s a fluffy and a subtlety sweet banana bread. I’ve already shared this link with several friends. I mention that I made it and I get “oooo that sounds good!” I send the link immediately! I made the first loaf following the recipe and it was done in about 45 mins. I didn’t believe it so I left it in a little longer and it was then a little too dry so really watch that. The next two loaves I made with unsweetened applesauce instead of oil and I found that they needed about 50 mins. They were perfect! I can’t wait to try more of your recipes!

    I just loved this recipe!
I did not put as much sugar because I dont like sweet things that much, I added one carrot and left out the vinegar, which I did not have and it taste just delicious!

On the top I use the marmelade from passion fruit which makes it even more amazing!
Thank you, I will be recommending this to everyone.

I have not tried this yet, but it looks amazing and loving all the positive comments. Before I make this, we follow a Whole Food Plant-Based diet plan. Oil in recipes is not allowed. Has anyone made this with a substitute for the oil such as unsweetened applesauce or baby purรฉed prunes? Thank you.

I’ve made this twice in the last two weeks and it’s delicious! The first time I halved the recipe as I had one very ripe banana and it turned out great! It’s the perfect ratio of chocolate and banana and the texture is moist and wonderfully crumbly. The recipe is simple and easy to follow and I love that “jump to recipe” button at the top of the blog. The only change I make to the recipe is to use half vanilla extract / half almond extract which I think goes great with the chocolate and the banana. Will be making this often!

This is honestly the best banana bread I have ever made! Its so simple and was a hit with the family. We loved it so much, I made it a 2nd time as soon as we finished the first. First batch we made with almond flour, came out nice and dense and was like brownie batter….yum! This time I used flour and it is definitely more like bread but just as good.
