This simple vegan Apple Pie is the perfect dessert with the best Apple pie flavor! The recipe is very easy and can be made gluten-free and sugar-free. A delicious treat for Christmas, Thanksgiving, and just everyday!

After posting so many delicious Apple Pie desserts on Instagram, it’s definitely time to share my favorite recipe for a classic American Apple Pie on my blog. This recipe is actually the basic recipe that I have also used for all other treats, such as mini apple pie muffins, apple pie hand pies, and hot apple pie pockets.

If I had to decide which cake I like best, it would be most likely an apple cake or apple pie. Not only because this simple pie is so easy to make, but also because it’s so incredibly delicious. The cinnamon apple filling makes it perfect for fall, but also reminds of Christmas and Thanksgiving. Once your house starts smelling so heavenly, thanks to the baked cinnamon apples, you‘ll notice what I mean and get into a cozy and relaxed Christmas mood.

Homemade Pie Crust is easy to make
Traditional Pie crust is usually made of flour, butter, a bit of sugar, water and a pinch of salt. To make this Pie crust dairy-free, I use vegan butter. I assure you, the result will be the same and as delicious as using regular butter. You will not notice the difference. I prefer making the pastry myself, but you can also use store-bought pastry dough to make this recipe.

How to make a simple vegan Apple Pie
First, cut the prepared pastry dough in half and roll out both halves. One half is for the bottom, and the other half is to cover the Pie. You can either put the second rolled out dough as a whole on top, or cut into strips using a pizza cutter or knife to make a lattice design, as I did.

Apple Cinnamon Filling
To make the filling, peel and core the apples, then slice thinly. Combine sliced apples with sugar, cornstarch, cinnamon and lemon juice in a large bowl. Toss until the apples are well-coated and set aside. Transfer the rolled out pastry dough for the bottom to a greased 10,5-inch (27-cm) pie dish or springform tin and gently press against the bottom and sides. Prick the bottom of the pie crust all over with a fork and then fill with the apples.

Cover the Apple Pie with a lattice design
As mentioned before, you can either cover the Apple pie filling with the whole pastry dough or cutting into strips to make a lattice design. After laying the pastry strips on top of the apple pie filling, trim the overhanging dough around the edges and carefully, crimp the top and bottom of the pastry a bit together. I love using any leftover pastry to make decorations for the pie because it’s so pretty. Just shape the remaining dough into a ball, roll out again and cut out designs of choice using a cookie cutter (I used a flower design). Place them on top of the crust and brush the top with a little plant-based milk/ cream or melted coconut oil. Then sprinkle with a bit of brown sugar and bake until golden brown. That’s it!

I hope you’ll enjoy this simple Vegan Apple Pie. It is:
- Dairy-free
- Egg-free
- Can be made gluten-free and refined sugar-free
- Easy to make
- Crisp & flaky
- Moist & juicy
- So delicious
- The perfect dessert for fall, winter and any occasion!

A versatile Apple Pie recipe
This recipe is super versatile. You can cut out circles, quarters or rectangles to make hand pies or hot pockets. You could also lay out the pastry into muffin tins to make mini apple pies. If you decide to do so, just cut the apples slightly smaller and always make sure to seal the sides of the pastry so the filling will not leak out. Also, have a look at your pastry during baking because smaller sized pies are done faster. Just feel free to be creative and try out different Apple Pie varieties! Maybe you would also like to try my vegan cherry pie. Have fun baking!

Vegan Apple Pie (easy recipe)

Ingredients
Pie Crust:
- 2 ½ cups flour * (375 g) (plus more for dusting)
- 3 tbsp sugar *
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 cup vegan butter (225 g) cubed and chilled
- 4 tbsp cold water
Cinnamon Apple Filling:
- 2 lbs apples (1 kg)
- ½ cup sugar * (100 g)
- 2 tbsp cornstarch
- 1-2 tsp cinnamon
- ¼ tsp nutmeg (optional)
- ½ lemon juice
To brush:
- a bit of plant-based milk/ cream or melted coconut oil
- 1 tbsp brown sugar
Instructions
*Note: I recommend watching the recipe video for visual instruction!
Pie crust:
- In a large bowl, combine the flour, sugar, and salt. Add the cubed vegan butter and work it into the flour with your hands. Gradually, add the cold water, a tablespoon at a time, and knead just until the dough clumps together. (Optionally, you could also put all ingredients to a food processor and pulse until a dough forms.)
- Divide the dough in half and shape into a ball or disc. Wrap in cling film and refrigerate for at least 1/2 hour.
Filling:
- Preheat the oven to 350˚F (180˚C).
- Peel and core the apples, then thinly slice.
- Transfer to a large bowl and add sugar, cornstarch, cinnamon, and lemon juice. Toss until the apples are well-coated. Set aside.
- On a lightly floured surface, roll out one half of the dough. Transfer to a greased pie dish* and gently press against the bottom and sides. Prick the bottom of the pie crust all over with a fork and then fill with the apples.
- Now roll out the other half of the dough and cut into strips. Lay them on top of the pie to make a lattice design (or cover with the whole rolled out dough*). Trim the overhanging dough and crimp around the edges.
- Optionally, use any leftover pastry to make decorations for the pie. Form the remaining dough into a ball, roll it out again, and cut out designs of choice using a cookie cutter. Then place them on top of the pie crust. (Watch the recipe video for more inspiration).
- Brush the top of the pie with a little plant-based milk/ cream or melted coconut oil and sprinkle with a bit of brown sugar.
- Bake the pie for about 50-60 minutes until golden brown. Cover the sides or top with tin foil if it gets too dark during baking.
- Let your Apple Pie cool before serving.
- Serve with a dollop of vegan ice cream and extra syrup, if you like!
- Enjoy!
Notes
- I used a 10,5-inch (27-cm) pie dish but you could also use a tartform or springform pan. A smaller size should work too.
- To make this cake gluten-free, you can use a gluten-free flour blend 1:1.
- To make this Apple Pie sugar-free, you can use Erythritol. You could also use coconut sugar, or regular white sugar, if you like.
- If you prefer to cover the pie with the whole rolled out crust (without cutting into strips to create a lattice design), then make sure to cut a hole in the center of the top crust (or prick a few times with a fork) to allow steam out.

This pie was delicious 😋 and drooling 🤤. The fun in making this pie from scratch was fun and challenging. Family loved it. Thanks for the recipe
That’s great! So glad your family loved it! ♡
Thank you so much! 🙂
This pie recipe is perfect! I followed exactly aside from using 1.5 cups of apple and 1 cup of cranberries. Used the handmade crust technique from my trusty non-vegan “Pie School” cookbook (one tip: your butter and water should be very cold — like “put a Pyrex of ice water in the freezer while you prep the other ingredients” cold) and brushed the top with condensed coconut milk because that’s all I had. It turned out amazing! Thank you Bianca!
So glad it turned out great! 😀
Thank you very much for your feedback and your tips! ♡
Merry Christmas! 🎄🎁
Hi Bianca. I am hoping to make this tomorrow but I don’t have any lemon juice could I use lemon juice from a bottle and if yes how much? Also I have both salted and unsalted vegan butter which should I use? Xx
Hi Tharan,
you can use 2 tbsp of bottled lemon juice.
Please use unsalted vegan butter! 🙂
I hope you’ll enjoy it! <3
Hey Bianca!
Could I use just regular vegan butter to brush on top, instead of vegan cream?
Can’t wait to make for my meat-eating family for Christmas!
Yes, sure! 🙂
Hi, I would like to make the recipe, it looks delicious, but almond flour works too?
No sorry, I don’t recommend using almond flour. 🙂
The recipe says sugar but the video uses brown sugar. Since granulated sugar can be quite a bit sweeter than brown, which do you mean? Should it be altered based on the sweetness of the apples used or does that not change the sweetness that much?
Hi Mark,
the sugar doesn’t change the sweetness that much! You can really use your favorite type of sugar! 🙂
Best, Bianca
Made this apple pie for thanksgiving and it was lovely! This was also the first pie that I have ever made! Followed directions and it did not disappoint! Already have requests to make it for Christmas! Thank you for this beautiful recipe!
Yay, that’s amazing!
I am so glad you enjoyed it! 🙂
Thank you so much for your feedback!
Best, Bianca <3
I made this pie for thanksgiving for vegans and non vegans and no one knew the difference! It was perfect. I used miyokos butter as the vegan butter
I am so glad you loved it! 🙂
Thanks for your feedback! <3
BEST RECIPE I COULD ASK FOR! Especially for a newbie pie maker like me. I followed the recipe to the T and it was more than I expected. It was fun, easy and so delicious. Everyone who tried a piece was impressed. Decorating it was really fun, I use little veggie/fruit cutters to make the shape. Oh, I didn’t use nutmeg and it was good enough and I use honeycrisp apples 🙂
So glad you love this vegan apple pie recipe! 🙂
Thank you so much for your amazing feedback! ❤️
Hi there!
I was wondering how long this pie is good for in the fridge after baking? Also how long would you need to reheat if for? Thanks so much!!!
You can keep baked apple pie at room temperature for up to two days. If the pie has been sliced, cover loosely with foil or plastic wrap. It will keep for an additional 2-3 days in the refrigerator when loosely covered. You can leave the pie in its dish, regardless of whether it is sliced or whole.
When ready to reheat, place the pie in an oven and bake for around 8-10 minutes, or until warm.
Hi, my kids have a food sensitivity to corn. What can I use as a substitute for cornstarch? thank you!
You could use arrowroot starch instead! 🙂
Made this pie today and it turned out lovely and so delicious!
That’s amazing! Thank you! 🙂
I made this pie a days weeks ago and it was delicious. I used readymade pastry because my baking skills are pretty basic and I didn’t want to ruin the pie and still was yummy. I love your blog Bianca, I will be trying other recipes for sure!
I am so glad your apple pie turned out delicious, Julia. 🙂
You should definitely try making homemade pastry as it’s so easy!

Best,
Bianca <3
This recipe was fantastic! This happened to be my first time making a pie from scratch and a pie in general. I love how versatile and thorough this recipe is, all my questions were easily answered in the details and notes.
Seriously, my whole family ate this entire pie in one day, not even realizing it was vegan! Plus, my husband from NY (I add this because he loved apple picking and homemade apple pie as a child in NY) said this was by far his favorite apple pie and wants me to make another ASAP!!!!
I loved everything from the crust to the filling, thank you for creating this recipe!
Fantastic! I am so glad your whole family loved this apple pie! 🙂
Thank you so much for your great feedback! <3
Love the recipe! Very very yummy and easy to make.
So glad you enjoyed it! Thank you! 🙂
Thank you for the recipe Bianca! The pie came out nice , but it did not really turn brown like in your pics. Is it ok if it is pale? What did I do wrong?
Hi Natalia, it is absolutely okay when it’s pale. The brown color comes from the non-cream I use for brushing the pie as shown in the recipe video. For the final touch I also sprinkle it with brown sugar! 🙂
Super leckere Kuchen und mega einfaches Rezept 😍.
Das freut mich wirklich sehr!
Vielen lieben Dank für das super Feedback 🙂
I did the apple pie for my father’s birthday. It was delicious, everybody loved it!!
It’s delicious and easy to make 😍
So glad everyone loved it!
Thank you so much for your feedback! ❤️
Hi there!!
Can you make this pie a few days in advance? And just cook it day of?
Thanks 🙂
It’s best to bake the pie after assembling or the dough will get soggy from the apples! 😀
that cake is so delicious. Like really is so yummy i love your recipies❤️❤️
So glad you enjoyed this apple pie! Thank you so much! 🙂
This was amazing!!!! Literally. Amazing. My non vegan family loved it so much they told me I need to make it for thanksgiving. My mom won’t let me share it, she took one bite and said “oh my god.” My dad who hates warm fruit said it was amazing. Please make this pie.
Thank you so much, Joy!
So glad everyone enjoyed it! 🙂
Much love,
Bianca ♡
Hello! It looks like a wonderful recipe! I would like to know if I can use whole wheat flour or if it works just with all-purpose flour? Thank you for your answer.
Hi Fanny,
I recommend using all-purpose flour as it will be crumblier if you use whole-wheat flour! 😉
Ok 🙂 Thank you for your answer 😀
Made it yesterday, it was fantastic! Everybody loved it. Crust came out wonderful, and the filling is so rich and full of flavor!
Thank you for such an easy to follow recipe! I will make it again for sure. I think it’s going to be one of my favorite things to bake from now on!
So glad you enjoyed this recipe! 🙂
Thank you so much for your lovely feedback! <3
Tried it and it was perfect!!! For the crust I used a mix of whole wheat and refined flour, the texture was crumbly and melt in your mouth. Thank you ❤️
So glad you love this recipe! Thank you so much! 🙂
I made this Apple pie last weekend and it was delicious 😍.
So glad you enjoyed it! Thank you 🙂
Perfect recipe. Loved it and already have a request from a feeling to make it on her birthday.
Increased portion 1.5 times. Made pie in 8″ pie fish and 9 single serve portions in a cup cake tin.
This will be on my monthly menu on demand….🙂.
So glad it turned out great! Thank you so much for your lovely feedback! 🙂
I’m not even a pie person normally, but we had a bunch of apples about to go bad so I googled “best vegan apple pie” and boy was that description accurate! The crust alone is incredible. And again, I don’t even normally like pie crust! I consider it one of those gifs that’s like “yeah, it’s fine” but 😍 I found myself eating the crust alone on the thicker parts (I didn’t have any tiny cookie cutters so I tried to shape hearts by hand hahaha. Not pretty, but delicious). Highly recommend this recipe!! My husband and I ate the whole thing in two days!
Thank you so much for this amazing feedback, Molly!
So glad you tried shaping hearts with your hands. 🙂
Lots of love to you! 🥰
How much lemon juice do you use? The recipe just says “1/2 lemon juice.” Tsp? Tbsp?
The juice of 1/2 lemon! 🙂
Thanks!
We made this Apple pie and it and it was SO GOOD!! It was a success at our home, everyone loved it!! 🥰
So glad everyone loved it!
Thank you so much for your amazing feedback. 🙂
Lots of love,
Bianca <3
Hi! I am about to try this recipe and very excited as it is my first attempt at making an apple pie! I was wondering what you meant by chill butter? Do I have to measure and then place it in the freezer for a while? If so, how long? I have it in the fridge and its quite soft, can’t really cube it. Thanks!
First, measure the chilled butter and cut into very small pieces. Then add to a bowl and place back in the refrigerator until it is firm again as it will soften when you cut it. Once it’s firm again, you can add it into the flour mixture and mix to combine! 🙂
Awesome! Thank you so much, can’t wait to make it!
Hope you’ll love it! 😊
My pie came out SO GOOD! Even though I made it in a bread pan haha! I need to get myself a pie pan ASAP. Thanks again <3
So glad you love this recipe! Thank you so much for your amazing feedback! 😍
Wow, absolutely delicious!!!!!!!!! Thanks so much for this amazing recipe! My apple pie was to die for. And it was gone in just a few days haha 🤍
I have a question. Can I sub the apples with other fruits or berries like cherries?
Thanks so much,
K
So glad you enjoyed this recipe! Sure, you can add other fruits, too! Thank you so much for your amazing feedback! ❤️
Hi Bianca, I love this crust recipe. However, I find the crust very difficult to work with. Even when I roll it out on parchment paper, as I transfer the whole crust into my pie pan it always breaks into pieces. Do you have any tips? Or is it same way for you and if it breaks you just have to mold the crust with your hands in the pan back into one piece? Thank you!
Hi Darya,
It’s totally normal that the pastry breaks but don’t worry – you can easily mold it with your fingers once it is in the pan! 😊
I made this today, and it was delicious. Not at all helped by me grabbing the cinnamon quickly and throwing a bunch on the apples, only to realise I just poured cumin all over them. My two jars look the same. Whoops! Totally salvaged though, I rinsed the apple slices and all was well. No hint of cumin in my pie 🙂 The recipe was perfect and really easy. To any other Aussies out there – I used Nutalex buttery 1:1.
So glad your cumin flavored pie was still delicious! 😃 Thank you for your amazing feedback! ❤️
Hi. Giving this one a try today (hopefully). Could I use margarine instead of the vegan butter? Thank you 🙂
Yes, sure! ❤️
Hey, can I use cold coconut oil instead of the vegan butter?
Yea, sure!
Don’t know what happened because I followed the recipe perfectly
Could you explain what happened? This recipe never lets me down.
Hi!
I just found your recipe for the vegan version. I have about half of the apple at home, and wondering if I can cut all ingredients in half and still make it work?
Yes, of course! Just be sure to use a smaller pie dish. Alternatively, you can also make these small mini apple pies! 🙂
Hi, I don’t have aby vegan butter. Replacing it with rapeseed oil or olive oil will work out?
You can use coconut oil! 🙂
Hi.
I’m going to try the pie filling recipe, and pie directions. Thanks!
I would like to take pictures, and share my pics on my blog/vlog. I hope that is okay with you. I would totally give you credit. Can I give your site link and part of the recipe filling + directions and recipe name? I’d like to give your recipe some credit, for helping me. Thanks!
Hi there, so glad you love this recipe! If you use it, I’d be happy if you can give me credit and link back to my blog. You can send me an E-Mail with details! 🙂
That was the first thing that I made from Bianca’s recipes! We loved it, ate it in 2 days 😀 that’s how delicious it was! The pie crust wasn’t thick at all, which made the pie really light and yummy. It was awesome! Will make it again. ❤ Bianca has amazingly delicious recipes, everything I made so far, turned out perfect!
Hi Kristina, so glad you love this vegan apple pie, too! Thank you for your amazing feedback! Merry Christmas and lots of love, Bianca <3
Will it be possible to make this pie with pears instead of apples? I’ve got pears at home that need to be used and came across this recipe. 🙂
Thanks!!
Hi Gudrun, I’ve already made this apple cake with pears and it turned out as delicious! Feel free to give it a try! 🙂
Hi Bianca,
What type of vegan butter did you use for that recipe, because I couldn’t find any in my grocery store?
Thanks! 🙂
Hi Kristina, I’m based in Germany and I buy “Alsan” vegan butter but I’m not sure if it’s available where you live. I hope you can find a good brand or feel free to substitute another vegan spread or coconut oil. Kind regards, Bianca <3
I made this pie today and it turned out really nice. It is quite pastry heavy so I might roll the pastry a little thinner next time but I’m definitely going to make it again. Plus mine only took 45 mins to cook. Thank you!!
Hi Joanna, so glad you liked the apple pie! I suggest rolling the pastry a little thinner and using less for the bottom crust, so you can use the rest for the top (lattice + decoration)! As you can see in the photos I also made cookies from leftover pastry to use as pie decoration! Thank you so much for your feedback! 🙂
Thanks so much for keeping this EASY Bianca!
With fall coming up, there’s nothing better than warm apple pie. My problem has always been that I feel TERRIBLE after a sugar-laden apple pie that spikes that glucose (fructose?).
Can’t wait to try this out and will be reporting back in a spiffy!
I don’t like a sugar mess too 😀 So I prefer adding less sugar, keeping it simpler 🙂 I hope you’ll enjoy it! Can’t wait to hear your feedback!
Hi!
Is it possible to make the dough beforehand and then leave it in the fridge overnight?
Thanks for the recipe!
Yes, sure! Just make sure to wrap it in foil tightly 🙂
Hi! We are getting ready to make this recipe, just wondering what is the measurement of lemon juice, 1/2 teaspoon? 1/2 cup? Thank you!! Will report back after we are done 🙂
Hi dear, it’s the juice from 1/2 fresh lemon fruit. Hope you’ll like it 🙂
I stumbled across this recipe last week, and it’s PERFECT. Thank you so much. I am about to make my second pie, which will be perfect for this Australian winter evening.
So glad to hear that you liked it 🙂 And thank you! <3
Hello Bianca,
I made the apple pie today and it was absolutely delicious.
I really loved the pastry it was so crusty.
Thank you for the recipe.
Domenico
So glad that you liked this pie. Thank you 🙂
This recipe looked delicious and I had apples so I decided to try it. Indeed, it was worth it to do it ? I recommend.
Just ! I baked it for 45-50 minutes and it was already a bit to much. So, becarefull with the backing time 😉
The baking time always varies, depending on your oven. So next time I recommend to reduce the baking time 🙂
Thanks for this great inspiration. I love your delicious apple pie. Now it´s my favorite pie (and my boyfriend’s fav). It´s also very easy to make. Have a wonderful day Bianca 🙂
So happy to hear that! ? Thank you so much! Honestly, love apple pie! Enjoy your weekend <3
Hello Bianca,
I can’t wait to make this apple pie! Which type of apples do you recommend using?
Thank you,
Caren
Hi Caren,
You can use any apples you like.
I usually use sour apples from our garden, but it depends on your taste.
Lots of love,
Bianca ❤️
